Esse projeto sempre me encantou. Lembro que na época do meu trabalho final de graduação na faculdade ele foi uma referência importante. Sempre na minha mente como um guia, uma intenção. E desde entao tenho vontade de ir ver de perto.

Por isso quando cheguei lá semana passada e só tinha uma horinha pra curtir o lugar e meu marido falou: Ah, vai é so uma piscina... eu fiquei tão desapontada quanto uma criança que não pode comer aquele sorvete que esteve sonhando o dia todo!

O projeto é de um dos meus arquitetos favoritos, o portugues Alvaro Siza Vieira e foi construido na decada de 60. Inclui duas piscinas de agua salgada, cabines para se trocar e um bar.

Ideia simples. Linhas simples e elegantes. Um primor, um espetáculo.

This project always enchanted me. I remember at the time of my final graduation project it was an important reference to my design. It was always on my mind as a guide, an intention. Since then I wanted to go there and see for myself. When I got there last week and realized I only had an hour to enjoy it and my husband said: Oh come on, it only a swimming pool... I got so disappointed that I felt like a child that can't have that ice-cream she was dreaming for all day long!

The project is made by one of my favorite architects, the Portuguese Alvaro Siza Vieira and it was build in the 60's. It includes two salty water swimming pools, changing rooms and a bar.

A simple idea. Simple lines and beautifully executed. Just amazing.

Ecobuild 2011

Essa semana ocorreu em Londres uma das maiores feiras de sustentabilidade do mundo. O Ecobuild acontece todo ano e reúne pesoas do mundo inteiro que se interessem em arquitetura sustentável. Eu fui em 2009 mas como tinha recém chegado em Londres, não estava trabalhando e não falava muito bem inglês, fiquei meio perdida.

Esse ano o escritorio que eu trabalho, o ZEDfactory participou da feira com um stand em parceiria com a Stramit - empresa que fornece placas de palha prensada pra construcao civil - e a chinesa Hinim - que fornece placas solares para geração de energia. Foi construída a parte superior de uma casa, chamada StramitZED que tem estrutura em madeira e paredes de Stramit, que além de serem estruturais são tambem isolantes térmicos.

Além disso, foi interessante ver a variedade de painéis solares, produtos feitos com materiais recicláveis e sistemas de reutilização da agua da chuva. Um stande que me chamou atenção foi a da empresa Biotecture que faz paredes vivas, ou seja, superfices internas e externas inteiramente cobertas com plantas.

E pra finalizar, assisti uma palestra muito interessante de uma arquiteta espanhola (na verdade italiana, mas com escritorio na espanha), a Benedetta Tagliabue escritorio EMBT. Ela falou um pouco do projeto do Pavilhão Espanhol da Expo Shanghai. Misterioso, dinâmico e fluido foram as palavras que ela usou pra descrever o edifício de estrutura metálica e "pele" de painéis de vime feitos por artesãos chineses. O escritorio tambem assina o projeto do Parlamento Escocês e do Mercado Santa Caterina em Barcelona.

um lugar chamado Notting Hill

Ja faz um tempinho que tirei essa foto e só essa semana me lembrei dela. Acho que ela levanta uma questão importante quando se trata em restauração e reforma. Manter ou não o caráter original?

Nesse conjunto residencial em Notting Hill podemos ver claramente a diferença entre o velho e o novo e também de opiniões. O sujeito dono da segunda casinha ali pelo jeito bateu o pé e não aderiu ao movimento. Observação: acredito que esta reforma só foi possível por que se trata da parte dos fundos da casa, apesar de ser a entrada, a fachada principal que dá pro parque do outro lado conservou o ar monumental.

As leis de restauro aqui em Londres são super rigorosas e muitas vezes depende muito da visão do carinha la da prefeitura pra dar ou não a permissão de construção. O que você acha?

It's been a while since I took this picture and only this week it came to my mine. I think it raises an important question related to restauration and refurbishment. Keep or not to keep it's original caracter?

This residential block in Notting Hill shows clearly the difference between the old and the new and also between opinions. The persond of the seccond house surely stamped his feet and didn't go with the wave. Note: I think this refurbishment was realy only possible because it's the back of the house; although its the entrance, the main facade which faces the square kept it's monumental caracter.

The laws for refurbishment here in London are quite strict and many times it depends on the view of a particular planner to grant or not the planning permission. What do you think?

1. The Shard em construção.

No primeiro dia do ano, saí pra dar uma volta pela cidade. Esta frio e nada convidativo, mas Londres é assim mesmo, só precisa de coragem pra sair de casa e com ceteza você irá se surpreender com a beleza ao seu redor. No horizonte não tem como evitar essa imensa estrutura que cresce a cada dia. É sinal das grandes mudanças que ja estão aconcendo... O novo perfil de Londres ja está definido e virando realidade.
O Shard, projeto do grande arquiteto Renzo Piano será o edifício mais alto da Inglaterra, com 310 metros de altura abrigará um hotel, escritórios, residências, galerias de arte e até praças publicas. Inspirado numa pintura renascentista de Londres com suas infinitas torres e foi idealizado para se tornar uma verdadeira cidade vertical.
Renzo Piano é um dos meus arquitetos favoritos e por isso vou postar aqui o site dele, caso alguem se interesse em conhecer um pouco mais da sua obra. Recomendo da uma olhada no projeto do escritório dele, construído à beira de um penhasco, é pura poesia!

On the firsta day of the year I went out for a walk arround the city. It was cold and no very inviting, but that's London and once you are out there it's always surprisinly beautiful. On the horizon it impossible to miss that huge structure comming up every day. It's a sign of all the changes to come. The new London skyline is defined and already happening.

The Shard, Renzo Piano's design will be the tallest building in Britain, 310 meters high which will house a hotel, office block and residential flats, art galeries and even public squares. It was inspired in a painting of London's many spires and it's supposed to be a real " vertical city".

Now, Renzo Piano is one of my favourites Architects so I am posting here his own website for anyone interested in getting to now his work better. Check out his studio's project; built in a very steep slope, it's pure poetry!

Leeds

Fim de semana passado fui a Leeds, uma cidade em Wesd Yorkshire, mais ou menos duas horas a norte de Londres. O nome vem de Loidis que era o tipo de floresta esxistente na região.

Visitamos as ruinas da igreja Kikrkstall Abbey - kirk é um antiga palavra para igreja - fundada em 1152 às margens do rio Aire. Um dia um grande monasterio a abadia foi dismantelada durante a famosa dissolução dos monastérios por Henrique VII. Leeds ficou muito famosa na epoca da revolução industrial pela produção de tecidos de lã, muitas fabricas se instalaram tambem à beira do rio.

A cidade hoje é um centro comercial e de negócios da região norte. Alguns edifícios importantes que fizeram parte da história da cidade ainda podem ser vistos. O Corn Exchanges por exemplo, como o nome diz, era um espaço para comercialização de milho é um dos tres últimos exemplares na Inglaterra. Hoje reformado o edifício é um vibrante shopping centre - com lojinhas bem interessantes e o Mercado central, onde foi fundada a primeira loja Marks&Spencer.

Last weekend I went to Leeds, a city in West Yerkshire, about two hours from London. The name originated from the word "Loidis" wich was a type of forest that used to cover the region.

We went to see the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, founded in 1152 on the banks of the river Aire. It was a large Cisterian monastery and it was disestablished by Henry VII during the famous Dissolution of the Monasteries... It was by the same river that textile factories established themselves during the Industrial Revolution making Leed famous arround the world for this industry.

Today Leed is an important comercial and business centre to the north. Some of the great historic buildings can still be seen like the Corn Exchanges that is today a vibrant shopping centre and the beautiful Market, where the first Marks&Spencer's shop was stablished.

O predio do museu é lindo, as exposições são sempre interessantes, mas a lojinha.... realmente vale a pena, pode contar em gastar pelo menos uma ora la dentro!

Guys... I could not let this one out, look at this cute little cross stich cart kit of the Battersea Power Station from the V&A shop! The building is great, the exhibitions are always interesting but, the shop... it's realy woth it, and you will spend at least an hour inside! So that's my tip of the day.

Battersea Power Station

Esse é um dos meus favoritos. A primeira vez que eu vim pra Londres, eu morava em Guildford com meu então namorado (hoje meu marido) e vinha pra cidade de trem e ficava admirando essa imponente e decadente estrutura. Cada vez eu imaginava um novo projeto na minha cabeça... um centro cultural, teatro, parque, uma usina de energia limpa... É um dos mais famosos pontos de referência de Londres e finalmente será renovação e adivinha: vai ser mesmo uma usina de energia limpa e tudo o mais que havia imaginado, e um pouco mais. O projeto ja está em fase final de aprovação pela prefeitura. Vejam esse video de lançamento que eu achei, é bem legal pra ter uma idéia da transformação do lugar.

Construido na década de 30, era uma usina elétrica que usava carvão e gerou energia pra Londres até 1983. O projeto foi encomendado a um renomado arquiteto da época o Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, também responsável pelo projeto do edifício hoje parte do Tate Modern e da famosíssima cabine telefônica vermelha.

Esse notável edifício já inspirou muitos artistas e fotógrafos, ja foi imortalizado em filmes como od de Hitchcok e na capa de um album Animals do Pink Floyd.

This is one of my favorites buildings. When I first arrived, I was living in Guildford with my (then) boyfriend, I used to stare at it from the train window when comming to Central London. I used to think to my self what wonderful things could be done with it. A museum, a park, a green energy power station and guess what, it all will come true!It's finaly set to renovation. The final project is alreay on planning applycation. Whatch this video, is quite good to have a better picture of what the changes will be.

It was built on the 1930's and it was a coal power station generating energy until 1983. The design of the exterior was given to a notorious Architect of the time, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, also the responsible for designing the building that today houses the Tate Modern and the famous red telephone box.

This remarkable buillding has inspired many artist, photographers, is imortalised on many film productions like of Hitchcok and in one of Pink Floyd covers.

Lloyds Building

Vou inaugurar uma nova sessão no blog chamada ícones da arquitetura. Aqui em Londres temos alguns bons exemplos como o Tate Modern, meu favorito, o futuro Shard, que ainda está em construção mas ja promete ser um marco na evolução da cidade, e o famoso Lloyds.

Projeto do arquiteto ingles Richard Rogers, o edifício demorou 8 anos pra ser construído e logo se tornou um ícone da arquitetura moderna. Também conhecido como o "edifício ao avesso", assim como o Centro Pompidou em Paris - projeto de Renzo Piano e Rogers, o edifício tem todas as estruturas de apoio e serviços como escadas, sanitários e tubulações de ar condicionado expostos na fachada o que permite um melhor aproveitamento do espaço interno. Os onze elevadores de vidro foram os primeiros do tipo no Reino Unido e no seu interior um grande átrio conecta todos os pisos e tem um ar de catedral gótica por sua dramática verticalidade.

O que eu achei muito peculiar e até meio engraçado foi o uniforme tradicional vermelho do guarda dentro de uma cabine hiper-moderna de vidro e aço. Reparem na foto, minha amiga de havaianas pedindo pra ele deixar a gente dar uma olhadinha no prédio, que aparentemente só se pode entrar vestido de terno e gravata...

Pra finalizar, vou inaugurar mais uma seção do blog, a chamada lojinha onde vou colocar links de lojas relacionadas a design e arquitetura. Adoro ver como a arquitetura se transforma em produto, como essas canecas de empilhar com o desenho do edifício. Muitas vezes a melhor parte de ir em museus e lugares turísticos e a lojinha do final, fala aí!

I'm starting today a new section on my blog, is called icons of Architecture. Here in London there are a few great exemples like the Tate Modern which is my favorite, the future Shard currently under construction and it's already promissing to have great influence on the changes of the city and the Lloyds Building.

Designed by Sir Richard Rogers, the building took eight years to be built and quickly became a landmark of the Modern Architecture.

It's known as the "inside out" building and alike the Centre Pompidou in Paris - designed by Renzo Piano and Rogers himself, has this futuristic caracter for all of the services like air conditioning pipes, staircases and toilets are attached on the exterior. This solution allows the best use of the interior space of the floor plan. Inside it has a great atrium which conects all the floors and has this gothic cathedral feeling for it's verticality.

One thing I found very particular and quite funny is the traditional red uniform of the consierge standing on a very contemporary glass ans steel box. Please notice my dear friend, wearing her havaianas, trying to convince the guy to let us go in to the building which, aparently, you can only do on a formal suit.

To finish, I'm starting another section on the blog called "lojinha", meeaning little shop, where I will post links to some nice little shops thats sells nice little things related to Design and Architecture. Like these staking mugs with the drawing of the building, it's curious to see how Architecture becomes a product and, I must confess that many times, the best thing about going to museums and turistic place is the shop! The Tower Subway

"As I was thinking of these things I disappeared from the world indeed, going down a lighted spiral staircase which buries itself in the earth on the right bank of the Thames, opposite the Tower. I went down and down between two dingy walls until I found myself at the round opening of the gigantic iron tube, which seems to undulate like a great intestine in the enormous belly of the river. The inside of this tube presents the appearance of a subterranean corridor, of which the end is invisible."

O túnel da torre, apesar de não muito conhecido, foi uma das primeiras passagens subterrâneas para trens do mundo. Foi muito importante por usar uma tecnologia inovadora, proposta de Marc Isambard Brunel, mais tarde utilizada na construção dos túneis do metrô.

O túnel foi construido para uso do transporte coletivo subterrâneo, porém só funcionou como tal durante 3 meses. Passou então a funcionar como passagem de pedestre até a ponte Tower Bridge ser construida; após isso o túnel foi vendido à London Hydraulic Company que, através da estação hidrelétrica de Wapping (a mesma do "capítulo" anterior), passou a utilizar o tunel como passagem de tubulação de água para abastecimento da região sul de Londres. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial o túnel sofreu grandes danos quando uma bomba foi arremessada no rio, perto da Torre.

Recentemente a nova estação do East London Overground Line em Rotherhithe é uma extensção da linha que passava pelo tunel Brunel e tem um museu dedicado a ele. Hoje em dia as tubulações transportam cabos da rede de telecomunicações e a entrada é a única coisa que ainda pode ser vista, uma pequena construção redonda com uma porta, perto da bilheteria da Torre de Londres.

The Tower Tunnel, although not very famous, was the first railway tunnel to be built in the world. It was important for using a new technology, by Marc Isambard Brunel, later used on the construction of the London tube.

It was built to run a passenger railway line but it only worked for 3 months.It then bacame a pedestrian subway until the Tower Bridge was built. After that the tunnel was sold to the London Hydraulic Company and from the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station (the one from the previous post , started to use the tunnel as water mains to bring water to South of London.
During the Second World War it sufered serious damage when there was some bombing on the river, near the Tower of London. Recently the new East London Oveground line is part of that old line and there is a museum specialy dedicated to this amazing engeniering structure. Currently though, comunication cables and equipments run throgh it and the only visible thing is the entrance, a litle round thing with a door near the the ticket office of the Tower of London.

The Crossrail

Na maioria das vezes ler o jornalzinho no metro me da arrepios.. tantas noticias ruins, imagens perturbadoras, mas as vezes eu ate que acho alguma coisa que preste. Quando cheguei em casa e contei pro meu marido sobre esse super-projeto que eu tinha lido ele falou: "ah e, o Crossrail, vc nao sabia?" Nao! Bom, como eu acho que muita gente por ai nunca ouviu falar disso, eu vou contar um pouco.

Crossrail e uma nova linha de trem parte subterranea passando pelo centro e parte de superficie que vai cruzar a cidade de leste a oeste interligando estacoes existentes e criando novas. Com novos edificos residenciais, lojas e escritorios, alguns desenhados por nomes internacionais da arquitetura como Renzo Piano, o projeto sera um catalizador de regeneracao urbana. Esta previsto pra 2017 e o mercado ja comecou a mudar. Areas como Woolich Arsenal, a leste de Canary Wharf, ja esta sendo chamado de o "novo Soho".

Londres e uma cidade incrivelmente dinamica e em constante mudanca e esse e apenas mais um projeto urbano que esta acontecendo em Londres no momento. Junto com todas as obras de melhoramento do metro - que geram tantos atrasos todos os dias, quem vive aqui sabe - o local dos jogos olimpicos e os novos edificios em construcao no centro que prometem mudar radicalmente o perfil da cidade. Mas isso assunto pra uma proxima vez...

Most of the times reading the news on the tube makes me sick.. so many bad news, disturbing pictures, but sometimes I manage to find some interesting bits. When got home I told my husbund about this amazing project I was reading about and he was like: "oh yes, the Crossrail, didn't you know it?" No I didn't! Well, as I am sure I am not the only one who never heard of it, I will talk about it.

So the Crossrail it's a new train line, wich combines over and underground and wil cross the city East to West connecting many existing stations and creating new ones. With new housing, shops and ofice buildings, some designed by important names of the international Architecture, like Renzo Piano, the project will be a real regeneration catalyst. It is expected to be finished by 2017 and hole market has already started to change.

Woolich Arsenal, on the far East is even been called "the new soho".

And the thing is.. it's only one of the amazingly big projects that are currently going on in London, together with all the tube improvements - the ones that are causing so many delays every day - the Olympics site and all the new buildings wich will transform the Skyline of the city. But this is a subject for another post...

Parece que esse blog ta meio as moscas, e ta mesmo, eu admito, mas agora eu sou parte de um grupo de bloguetes - vulgo bloguetchys - e eu estou decidida a acompanhar o ritmo delas e manter o bandito blog aualizado!

Minha ideia era fazer desse blog um blog "serio", escrito com fundamento, nada muito cheio de opinioes, mas com fatos interesantes, historicos, etc. Mas talvez um pouco de liberdade e diversao nao sejam la uma ma ideia, nao acham?

Bom, entao vamos la, maos a obra... Espero que gostem!

Londinium part 2: THE RETURN

It seems like this blog has been left behind and I have to admit it is true. But I am now part of a blogger's group and I have decided to catch up with it!

Sexta feira passada fui a um programa bem interessante, assistir a um documentário sobre Docklands numa igreja e com trilha sonora ao vivo! Foi a abertura do East London Film Festival, que está acontendo até o dia 30 de abril em diversas localidades da zona leste de Londres - de cinemas a igreja, literalmente.

O filme, The rime of the modern mariner, mostra o que aconteceu com toda uma comunidade de trabalhadores das docas e o que sobrou do que foi, um dia, o maior porto do mundo. A arquitetura decadente e a influência de um novo centro financeiro na vida e cultura dessas pessoas. A trilha sonora ao vivo e o lugar fizeram do evento algo realmente especial.

A igreja St Anne fica em Limehouse e é projeto do arquiteto Nicholas Hawksmoore, dissípulo de Sir Christopher Wren. Foi parte do Ato do Parlamento de 1711, um contrato para a construção de 50 igrejas com o intuito de "atender" ao rápido crescimento da cidade mas que dessas, apenas algumas dessas foram de fato erguidas. Segundo foi dito no evento, a igreja serviu como refúgio durante a segunda guerra e de espaço para concertos e até mesmo filmes. Seu órgão recebeu medalha de ouro na Grande Exibição de 1851, no Palácio de Cristal.

Last friday I went to a very interesting evening, to watch a documentry film about the Docklands in a church with live soundtrack! It was the first day of the East London Festival that is on until the 30th of April in many venues arround the east end - from cinemas to churches, literaly.

The film, The rime of the modern mariner, shows what happened to the dockers community and what is left from what was, one day, the largest port of the world. The decaying architecture and the influence of the new finacial centre in this people's lives and culture. The live soundtrack and the setting made this event something truly special.

St Anne's Church is located in Limehouse and is Nicholas Hawksmoore's project, student of Sir Christopher Wren. It was part of the 1711 Act of Parlament, that intended to build over 50 churches in order to "attend" the growth of the city, but of those, only a few were actualy built. According to what was said at the event, the church became a shelter during the IIWW and a place for concerts and even cinema sections. Its organ won a golden medal on the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace.

The Wapping Project

Primeiro operando a vapor depois a eletricidade, a usina hydroelétrica de Wapping foi construida em 1890 para gerar energia para a zona leste de Londres. Após o fechamento da usina o edificio foi tomabado pelo patrimonio histórico, em 1977, e convertido num centro cultural.

O lugar é agora um espaço incrível com um restaurante no ambiente principal e uma galeria de arte no andar inferior. Feito com muito bom gosto e extremamente simples, o projeto manteve o edifício com o aspecto de antigo e todo o maquinário original; correntes, elevadores e turbinas ocupam o mesmo espaçao de mobiliário contemporâneo e ótima culinária.

First operating using steam then electricity, the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station was built, in 1890, to generate energy to the East End. After its closure the building was designated grade II listed building and converted into an art centre.

The place is now an amazing space with a restaurant on the main hall and an art galery on the basement. Stylish and extremely simple, the project kept the vintage aspect of the contruction and all the original machinary; chains, elevators and turbines live side by side with contemporary furniture and great cuisine.

Covent Garden foi a primeira praça pública rodeada por habitação construida em Londres. Originalmente, o local era ocupado por um convento que produzia frutas e verduras. Após a dissolução dos Mosteiros pelo rei Henrique VIII, essas terras foram confiscadas e passadas para o Conde de Bedford e seus herdeiros então obtiveram permição para ali construir o empreendimento.

Inigo Jones, primeiro arquiteto inglês a ir estudar na Itália, foi contratado para o serviço. A era uma praça pública rodeada por uma marquise com lojas no pavimento térreo e habitação em cima, e claro, uma igreja em um dos lados. Foi ele quem trouxe o estilo reanscentista para a Inglaterra - como no projeto da "Queen's House" em Greenwich, de 1616. A igreja, por exemplo, mais parece um templo Romano com a fachada triangular e imponentes pilares. Curiosamente, tem a entrada não pela praça mas pela parte de trás voltada para o oeste, como é tradicional.

Após o Grande Incêndio e por ser um local de fácil escoamento pelo rio, o mercado ja em pleno funcionamento na praça central, se tornou o mais importante da cidade. Essa intensa atividade fez com que a aristocracia se retirasse do local, grande parte indo se instalar em Mayfair, mais a oeste. Ao longo do tempo a area foi se transformando, o Royal Opera House se instalou ali, um edificio novo para o mercado foi construido e até hoje Covent Gardem é um dos lugares mais turísticos de Londres. É um importante centro comercial com lojas, restaurantes e performances de artistas, um verdadeira praça pública.

Covent Garden was the first public Square built in London. Originaly, the area was ocupied by a convent which was a sorce of fruit and vegetables. After the dissolution of the monasteries by the king Henry VIII, the land was confiscated and given to the Earl of Bedford then his heirs got permission to develop it.

Inigo Jones, first architect to go study in Italy, got the job. The project was a public square sorrounded by an archade with shops on the ground floor and housing on top and a church, of course, in one of the sides. He brought the Renaissance style to England - like on the Queen's House in Greenwich, 1616. The church, for example, looks more like a Roman temple with a triangular facade and imposing pilars. Curiously, it has its main entrance not facing the square but on the back wich, tradicionaly, faces west.

After the Great Fire and because it's got easy access to the River, the market at this point with great activity, became the most important market of the city. This intense activity made the aristocracy move from there, mostly went to Mayfair, further west. Year after year the area kept transforming, the Royal Opera House was established there, then a new building for the market buit and till today, Covent Garden is one of the most turistic places in London. It's an important commercial site with shops and restaurants ans performing artists, a real public square.

2 Bedford Square - 1775

A expansão para o oeste de Londres se deu através de empreendimentos privados, onde os herdeiros dos condes e duques vendiam suas terras para dar lugar a construções de conjuntos habitacionais de alto padrão. E tal como Covent Garden, Gosvenor Square em Mayfair, Soho, Leicester Square e Bloomsbury Square também seguiram a tentência da praça central. Bedford Square faz parte deste movimento e é até hoje um dos mais bem preservados exemplos da tradicional architetura Georgiana, a maioria das edificações são tombadas pelo patrimonio histórico.

Uma das mais renomadas escolas de arquitetura da Inglaterra está situada em Bedford Square. A Architectural Association é muito envolvida em atividades em seu entorno e promove instalações de trabalhos dos alunos na praça - quer dizer, na calçada, pois o jardim central tem acesso privado.

As fotos acima são de um desses trabalhos, montados no verão de 2009, que eu tive o prazer de visitar.

The expansion to west London was based on private developments, heirs of earls and dukes would sell their land to give place to housing construction. And like Covent Garden, Gosvenor Square in Mayfair, Soho, Leicester Square and Bloomsbury Square also fallowed the public square standard. Bedford Square was part of this movement and it's one of the best preserved samples of the tradicional Georgian House, most of its houses are grade I listed buildings.

One of the most renowned schools of architecture of England ocupies a house in Bedford Square. The Architectral Assossiation is very engaged in urban activities and promotes exhibitions of the students works on the square - I mean, on the pavement, because the centra garden has got private access.

Umas das melhores coisas de se morar em uma cidade como Londres é a possibilidade de poder ouvir um dos grandes nomes da arquitetura contemporânea. Aliás, esse é o nome do evento que traz Daniel Libeskind: Ícones da arquitetura. Ele deve falar no Royal Geographical Society dia 29 de abril; o preço é um pouco salgado mas tenho certeza de que vai valer a pena!

Libeskind, arquiteto polonês radicado nos Estados Unidos, é autor de obras importantes como o Museu Judaico em Berlin, que eu tive o privilégio de visitar em 2007, e o prédio da London Metropolitan University em Londres. É também vencedor do concurso para a reconstrução do World Trade Center, que está atualmente em construção em Nova Iorque.

Seus projetos são em geral imponentes e esculturais, com alta technologia, muito vidro e metal e na minha opinião, um tando "esquisofrênico". No Museu Judaico, por exemplo, essa linguagem casou muito bem com o tema. As paredes são fora do prumo, o chão inclinado, há um lindo jogo de luz. Além disso, há espaços claustrofóbicos que nos permitem experimentar a sensação de opressão sofrida pelos judeus durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Não sou muito familiar com o restante dos seus projetos por isso estou muito animada pra ir e ouvir do autor suas razões e circuntancias!

One of the good things of living in a city like London is the possibility of being able to listen face to face to one of the icons of contemporary architecture. In fact, that's the name of the event that brings David Libeskind to London: Icons of Architecture. He will be speaking at the Royal Geografical Society on the 29th of April; it's a bit pricy but I'm sure it will be worth it!

Libeskind, a polish Architect settled in the United States, is the author of important projects like the Jewish Museum in Berlin, that I visited in 2007 and the building of the London Metropolitan University in London. He is also the winner of the contest for the rebuilding of the WTC site, which is currently under construction in New York.

His projects are usualy imposing and sculptured, it uses high technologies, a lot of glass and metal and in my opinion, it's slighty "crazy". At the Jewish Museum for instance this language went well with the theme. The walls are not straight, the floor slanted, there is a beautiful light coming through. Beyong that, there are some claustrophobic rooms that allowed us to get a sense of the oppression suffered by the jewish during the Second World War.

I'm not familiar with all his work and that's way I'm exited about going there and hearing from the author his reasons and circumtances!

Robin Hood Gardens and The New Brutalism

Robin Hood Gardens é uma habitação popular em Poplar, bairro da zona leste de Londres. Construido entre 1966 e 72 por Alison e Peter Smithson, consiste em dois blocos de apartamento, um com 10 e o outro com 7 pavimentos, feitos de placas de concreto pré-moldado. São 213 apartamentos alguns de um andar e outros tipo duplex e um largo corredor a cada 3 andares, chamados pelos autores de "ruas aéreas". isso quebra a composição e gera um senso de comunidade. Entre os blocos tem uma praça interna, um jardim privado, protegido do barulho da rua.

Poplar se desenvolveu de um pequeno vilarejo a norte de Isle of Dogs onde a compania East India se estabeleceu em 1600. Era uma área rural onde mercadores e construtores de navios construiram suas residências. Na metade do século 17 após a abertura da doca leste e oeste, a população cresceu significativamente e casas de alto padrão começaram a aprecer na avenida central. Porém o declínio da região veio logo, quando em 1899 o município de Poplar anexou Bow e Bromley e construiu uma nova prefeitura no centro de Bow. As lojas se fecharam e favelas cresceram ao redor. Após ser intensamente bombardeada durande a Segunda Guerra Mundial, houve um intenso plano de reconstrução com habitação popular e edifícios institucionais. Na década de 50 e como parte do Festival Britânico de 1951, a novo bairro de Poplar foi construido com modestos conjuntos de casas unifamiliares e residências de alta densidade habitacional.

Robin Hood Gardens é conhecido um dos primeiros edifícios no estilo Novo Brutalismo, uma manifestação Inglesa do modernismo pós-guerra que tem Le Corbusier como mestre. O termo Brutalismo vem de bréton brut que significa concreto bruto. Curiosamente, Peter Smithson se tornou sinônimo desse estilo também porque ele tinha o apelido de "brutus" na sua época de estudante.

Atualmente, há uma extensa discução sobre se o conjunto deve ser demolido pelo governo ou conservado, como tanto deseja a comunidade arquitetônica. Nomes importantes como Zaha Hadid estão apoiando o English Heritage nessa campanha contra o governo pedindo pelo tombamento do conjunto, mas até agora, o notável projeto está sentenciado à demolição.

Robin Hood Gardens is a housing estate in Poplar, East London. Built between 1966 and 1972 by Alison and Peter Smithson, it consists of two long blocks of flats, one with 10 and the other with 7 storeys, made from precast concrete slabs. There are 213 flats of mixed one-storey and two-storey maisonettes and an aerial walkway every 3 floors, called by the authors the “streets-in-the-air”. It breaks up the composition and provides a sense of community. Between the blocks is an internal square, a private garden protected from the noise of the street.

Poplar developed from a small settlement north of the Isle of Dogs where the East India Company was established in 1600. It was a rural area where merchants and shipbuilders made their homes. In the mid 17th Century, after the opening of the West and East India Dock, the population rose significantly and smart houses started to appear in the High Street. However, the decline of the area soon came, when in 1899 the Borough of Poplar took in Bow and Bromley and built a new Town Hall in Bow Road. The shops were then closed and slums grew around it. After being heavily bombed during the Second World War, there was an extensive reconstruction plan with council housing and institutional buildings. In the 1950’s and as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951, the New Poplar Town was built with modest terrace houses and high density estate housing.

Robin Hood Gardens is known as one of the first building in The New Brutalism style, an English manifestation of the post-war Modernism ideal which had Le Corbusier as its master. The term Brutalism comes from the béton brut which means raw concrete. Curiously, Peter Smithson also became synonymous with the style because he had the nickname “Brutus” in his student days.

Currently there is an extensive discussion about whether it should be demolished by the Government or conserved, as the Architectural community wish. Some important names, such as Zaha Hadid, are supporting the English Heritage in this campaign against the Government, asking for the site to be listed, but until now, the remarkable project is sentenced to be pulled down.

Quando os Leões beberem, Londres vai afundar...(tradução própria)

Um ditado quase que assustador prevê que quando as águas alcançarem os anéis na boca do leão, é porque Londres corre perigo. A cabeça do leão com anel está na parede lateral às margens do rio Tamisa, em Victoria Embankment Gardens. Não apenas um adorno eles são uma marca de nivel, o limite seguro das águas, antes da inundação.

O rio Tamisa nasce a 346 km da costa leste de Londres, sendo um rio de maré, ja chegou a crescer 7 metros. Após anos de medo e de duas grandes inundações, as barragens foram construidas. O projeto vencedor, do escritório Rendel, Palmer and Tritton, é além de um sistema inteligente uma construção escultural na paisagem. Foi inaugurada em 1984 pela Rainha Elisabeth II após de 8 anos de construção.

Entre uma estrutura e outra estão as comportas que tem o formato de segmentos cilindricos semi-fechados e que rotacionam no eixo horizontal (veja o corte transversal). O sistema é acionado por computadores conectados a uma estação de meteorológia que manda o alerta de uma possível tempestade e inundação. Inicia-se então o processo de fechamento e durante 9 horas todo o tráfego no rio pára, as comportas subsidiárias fechadas, seguidas pelas barreiras propiamente ditas.

As Barragens do Tamisa foram projetadas para defender Londres de inundações até 2030 sob limites aceitáveis. Além disso, cálculos recentes estimam que mesmo com um possível aumento do nível do mar, devido aos efeitos do aquecimento global, as barragens aguentariam até 2070.

A quite terrifying popular saying tells us that when the water levels reech the rings on the lion's mouth, it means London is in danger. This lion's head is on the Thames bank, at Victoria Embankment Gardens. Not just decorative the figure is a level mark, the safe water level before flooding occurs.
The River Thames rises 346 km from the East cost of London and being a tidal river, it has a rise and fall of 7 meters. After years of fear and two big floods, the Thames Barrier was built. The winning project from the Rendel, Palmer and Triton office, is more than an intelligent system it's a sculpture on the landscape. It was opened in 1984 by Queen Elizabeth II after 8 years of construction.
In between the structures are the flooding gates which are half-open cylindrical segments that rotate horizontally (see the cross section). The system is connected to a forecasting computer station that sends alerts of a possible storm and flooding. The closure process is then started and during the following 9 hours all the river traffic is stopped, subsidiary rivers are closed followed by the barrier itself.
The Thames Barrier was built to protect London from floodings until 2030, withing acceptable limits. Beyond that, recent calculations show that even with possible sea level rises, as a consequence of gobal warming, the barriers would be effective until 2070.

O verão de 1858 foi excepcionalmente quente. O rio, um esgoto a céu aberto, ficou extremamente mal cheiroso, resultando no famoso "grande fedor". O cheiro era tanto que os políticos não conseguiam trabalhar no edifício do Parlamento e foi então decidido criar um grupo especial para resolver o problema. Muitos projetos já haviam sido apresentados porém todos sem sussesso, até que o engenheiro Joseph Bazalgette teve sua proposta aprovada e após 6 anos de obras, o problema foi resolvido pra sempre.

O projeto era contruir um grande sistema de drenagem de esgoto percorrendo 1.800 km nas duas margens do rio. Escoando por gravidade ou bombeamento quando necessário, todo o esgoto era armazenado em reservatórios na zona leste da cidade até total escoamento no mar. No projeto final Bazalgette decidiu dobrar o diâmetro das tubulações préviamente definido o que definiu o sussesso do sistema. Vale dizer que toda essa rede equivale hoje a menos de 1% da rede atual que inclui estações de tratamento e modernas instalações .

Iniciou-se então uma gigantesca obra urbanística que definiu a nova cara do rio Tâmisa e consequentemente da cidade de Londres. Toda a extenção da margem norte, de Blackfrias passando pelo Victória Embankment Gardens e Westminster até a ponte Battersea, se tornou uma importante ligação entre a cidade e rica zona oeste, o bairro de Chelsea. Hoje, esse é o cartão postal de Londres, com intensa atividade comercial, festivais de verão e obras modernas como a bela London Eye.

The summer of 1858 was exceptionaly hot. The river, an open sewage, got extremely smelly resulting in the famous "Great Stink". The smell was so strong that it was impossible for the politians to work in the House of Commons and they decided to create a special group to solve the problem. Many projects had been made before without success - until Sir Joseph Bazalgette had his proposition approved and after 6 years of work, the issue was solved forever.

The project was to build a huge sewerage system running for 1,000 miles on both sides of the river. Drained by gravity or pumping when necessary, all the sewage was stored in reservoirs on the East side of the city until its complete discharge into the sea. At the final design, Bazalgette doubled the diameter of the pipes he calculated previously, to ensure the success of the system. It is worth saying that these pipes represent less than 1% of the existing network today, including treating stations and modern installations.

This work started a large urban refurbishment which has defined the new look of the river and consequently of London. The whole extension on the north bank, from Blackfrias through Victoria Embankment Gardens and Westminster until Battersea Bridge, became an important link between the City and the wealthy West End in Chelsea. Today, this is the postcard of London, with an intense commercial activity, summer festivals and the place of modern features such as the London Eye.

O LFA 2010, Festival de Arquitetura de Londres, acontecerá entre os dias 19 de junho a 4 de julho e promete muita atividade na capital Inglesa. O evento dura aproximadamente duas semanas e é muito esperado tanto por profissionais da área como pelo público em geral. E esse ano tem como tema "A cidade Acolhedora".

Dentre os vários eventos em diferentes pontos da cidade estão a Internacional Architecture Showcase que abre espaço para expressões arquitetônicas do mundo inteiro - em 2008 sete escritórios brasileiros participaram inclusindo Paulo Mendes da Rocha e os jovens da Brasil Arquitetura. Também o Love Your Street que foca no uso do espaço urbano e inclui até trabalhos de limpesa e transformação de espaços reminecentes.

Also the Love Your Street program that focuses on the urban space use and includes even cleaning up works and tranformation of left over spaces.

Expanding eastwards - Docklands

Docklands é uma das áreas de maior desenvolvimento em Londres atualmente. Um centro financeiro mundial, com arranha-céus crescendo rapidamente e grandes obras de infraestrutura, ja foi uma região de charcos e plantação de milho.

Do Porto de Londres navios partiram pra expedições na América por volta de 1500 e já no século 19 chegou a ser a maior área portuária do mundo indo desde St Katharine's Dock, perto da Torre de Londres, até Barking. Tendo como fator importante o vento vindo do sudoeste, a instalação de fábricas alí era ideal pois toda fumaça era carregada em direção oposta ao centro da cidade.

Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial a região de Docklands foi muito bombadeada deixando 10 mil pessoas desabrigadas, porém o porto continuou em grande atividade até meados da década de 60. A partir de então começou a decadência, fabricas e armazéns fecharam as portas e empregos foram perdidos. Já em 1980 foi declarado o início do processo de regeneração onde projetos de revitalização urbana, estímulos para atividades econômicas e melhor qualidade de vida para pessoas estavam nos planos do governo inglês. Em 1987 foi implantada a Docklands Light Railway, um trem controlado por computador, logo depois o London City Airport aberto e um gigantesco complexo de edifícios comerciais em Canary Wharf teve suas obras iniciadas. Fato é que o número de pessoas trabalhando na região cresceu de 7 pra 42 mil entre 1993 a 2002.
Hoje Docklands e toda região leste de Londres esta se revelando um ótimo lugar para morar e trabalhar - e por sinal, é onde eu moro.

Docklands is one of the bigest developing areas in London now a days. A financial centre with skycrapers rising fastly and large infrastructure works going on, it was once a marsh land and cornfields place.

From the Port of London ships departed to America arround the years of 1500's and in the 19th Century it was already the world's largest port streching from St Katharine's Dock, close to the Tower of London, until Braking. Having as an important factor the winds comming from the south-west, it was ideal for the factories to instal themselves there because all the smoke would be carried away from the city centre.

During the Second World War Docklands area was havily bombed leaving 10.000 people homeless, however the port kept in great activity until mid 60's. Then, the decadence period started, factories and warehouses shut their doors and loads of jobs were lost; but soon in 1980 was declared the start of the regenaration process. Urban revitalization projects, encouraging economic activities and better quality of life to the people was on the Government's plans. In 1987 the DRL, a train controled by computer, started running, then the London City Airport opened and a gigantic building complex in Canary Wharf started to be built. Fact is that the number of workers in the area has grown from 7,000 to 42,000 betwen 1993 and 2002.
Today Dockland it's a great place to live and work, and, of course, is where I live.

O grande incêndio de Londres foi um evento importante para a renovação da cidade. Além de livrar da peste, limpou a cidade de todo porão úmido e mau cheiroso e possibilitou que grandes obras de arquitetura, arte e urbanismo florescessem.

A praça do Soho naceu nessa época, em 1670 foi idealizada para homenagiar o rei Charles II, então chamada de King's Square. Até o século 18 a área era habitada pela aristocracia, porém em 1800 todas essas "familias respeitáveis" haviam se mudado e ali se instalaram pequenos teatros e bares. A partir daí o Soho ficou conhecido como lugar de muita agitação intelectual, musica e boemia.

No meio da praça há uma pequena construção construida em 1875 em estilo Tudor. Usada no verão, atualmente passa por uma fase de recuperação que inclui a renovação da estrutura de madeira original e a substituição do acabamento externo com processo tradicional.

The Great Fire of London was an important event for the renovation of the city. Beyond vanishing the plague, it cleansed the city from every dumpy and smelly basement and enabled great architecture, art and urbanism to blossom.

Soho Square was born then. In 1670 it was erected in the name of King Charles II and at the time called King's Square. Until the 18th Century the area was inhabited by the aristocracy, but in 1800 all those "respected families" had moved out and a series of bars and small theatres were installed.

In the middle of the square there is a small lodge built in 1875 in Tudor style. It is used during summer but is currently undergoing regeneration work wich includes to renovate the original timber and replace the walls with traditional lime renders.

No periodo Anglo-Saxão, o rio Fleet era assim, largo, saudável e cheio de vida. Servia de doca para descarregamento de mercadorias que entravam pelo rio Tamisa. Numerosas fontes foram construidas ãs suas margens e as nas nascentes eram até conhecidas por suas forças curativas, como a de Clerkenwell. Com o cresciemento da cidade, cada vez mais o rio foi sendo usado para despejamento de esgoto e ja no século 13 o rio foi considerado poluido. Nos seus arredores construções pobres e até a instalação de prisões contribuiram muito para o deterioramento do rio.

Após o grande incêndio de Londres, foi iniciado o processo de canalização. Finalizado em 1680 o New Canal, não muito usado, foi mais tarde coberto e transformado no Fleet Market que por sua vez foi demolido em 1860 para a construção da rua Farrington. Pro lado do rio Tamisa or rio foi coberto na época da construção da ponte Blackfrias; também na região de Kings Cross e Camden foi coberto para possibilitar a crição do Regent's Canal - que vale um capítulo especial.

Hoje o rio Fleet é uma rede subterrânea que começa sob o "posh" bairro às beiras do parque Hampstead Heath, passando pelo "cool" mercado de Camden Town e a linda estação internacional de trem St Pancrass. Logo antes de seu desfecho final no Tamisa, passa pela histórica rua da indústria jornalística hoje chamada Fleet Street.

In the Anglo-Saxon age the river Fleet was like this picture, large, healthy and full of life. It was used as dock for shipping good brought from the Thames. Numerous wells was built on its bak and the ones on springs were known by its healing power, like Clerkenwell. With the growth of the city more and more the river became a sewage dreiner and by the 13th Century it was consedered poluted. In the area poor housing and even the instalation of prisions added to the degradation of the river.

After the great fire of London the covering process started. Completed in 1680 the New Canal, not so used since then, was transformed in the Fleet Market wich later as demolished to give place to Farrington Street. To the other direction, close to the River Thames, it was covered when Blackfrias Bridge was built; also in Kings Cross and Camden area it was demolished to be possible the criation of Regent's Canal - wich deserves another chapter.

Today the River Fleet is a large underground sistem that starts under the posh area sorrounding Hampstead Heath Park and runs through the cool Camden Market and the beautiful international train Station St Pancras. Just before its grand finale on the Thames the river runs through the famous newspaper industry road today called Fleet Street.

Saint Paul's Cathedral

Como mencionado na postagem anterior, a Catedral Saint Pauls foi queimada pelo grande incêndio de 1666, porém antes disso ja havia passado por maus bocados. No mesmo local ja foram erguidas e destruidas varias contruções; passando por uma pequena capela de madeira destruida pelo fogo em 962, outra, ja com elementos de pedra novamente queimada em 1087. A ilustraçao retrata a quarta tentativa, uma imensa catedral construida pelos Normandos, porém também destruida num incêndio em 1136. Quando os trabalhos foram concluidos e em 1314 era a mais longa Catedral da Europa, com uma torre de 149 metros de altura e a que queimou no grande incêndio de Londres...

As I mentioned previously, Saint Paul's Cathedral was burnt in the great fire of 1666 however, it has had some pretty bad moments before that. On the same plot many structures were built and destroyed; counting a small chapel made of timber destroyed in 962, another one with some stone elements also destroyed in 1087, all by fire. The picture shows the fourth attempt, a huge cathedral built by the Normands but also burnt away in 1136. By the end of its construction in 1314 it was the longest Cathedral in Europe, with a spire of 149 meters and the one that burnt in the great fire of London...

O desenho que conhecemos hoje é projeto do arquiteto Sir Christopher Wren de 1668. Após varios estudos, o desenho final da Catedral é inspirado na Basilica de São Pedro em Roma, no estilo chamado Barroco Inglês.

The plan we know today is a project of the Architect Sir Christopher Wren from 1668. After many studies, the final drawing of the Cathedral was inspired by St Peter's Basilica of Rome, in the English Barroque style.

The great fire

Planta da area atingida pelo incêndio

O grande incêndio de Londres em setembro de 1666, durou tres dias e queimou a maior parte da cidade romana, essencialmente com contruções em madeira. O fogo começou em uma padaria em Pudding Lane onde hoje há um obelisco chamado "The Monument" e se espalhou rapidamente, queimando inclusive a Catedral Saint Pauls. A ponte de Londres, na época completamente construida, já havia sido alvo de outro incêndio em 1632, e devido a um espaço não edificado no meio da ponte, o fogo não pode se espalhar para o outro lado do rio. Após dias de agonia e muitos esforços, o vento leste deu uma trégoa e só assim foi possível conter o fogo.
A cidade que conhecemos hoje foi toda reconstruída a partir de então, mas manteve-se o traçado original, apesar de algumas tentativas de projetos para uma reconstrução baseada num traçado barroco europeu. A maioria das ruas estreitas e sinuosas foram mantidas, porém tendo o cuidado de abrir largas avenidas e permitir acesso fácil ao rio Tamisa, além de regulamentos terem sido criados para que casas fossem agora construidas com tijolo e pedra ao invés de madeira.

The great fire of London in September of 1666, lasted three days and burnt the majority of the old Roman city, mainly made of wooden houses. The fire started at a bakery in Pudding Lane where today stands "The Monument" and quickly spread burning even Saint Paul's Cathedral. London Bridge, at the time completely built, had suffered with a previous fire in 1632 and due to a gap in construction in the middle of the bridge, the fire didn't spread to the other side of the river. After a few agonizing days and a lot of effort, the east winds died down and only then was it possible to stop the fire.

The city we know today was rebuit since then but the original plan was kept, despite of some failed attempts of a reconstruction based on the european Barroque style. The majority of its narrow street were preserved but taking care to open large roads and leaving free access to the river. Regulations were also created to make sure houses were made out of brick and stone rather than wood.

the Roman and the comtemporary city

Londinium é o nome da cidade fundada pelos Romanos no ano de 43 DC, um vilarejo fortificado à margem norte do rio Tamisa, ou Tamesis como era chamado. Pode-se identificar na planta da cidade romana, o local onde se situa hoje a Catedral Saint Pauls e a Torre de Londres. Fora da muralha da cidade, vê-se um lugar chamado Barbican, onde hoje há um grande complexo residencial cultural. Na segunda imagem, uma foto aérea exatamente da mesma região, é impossível não se espantar com a densidade e tranformação. A cidade atual, tão edificada, sobreviveu ao grande incendio de 1666 e ainda mantém algo do traçado otiginal.

Londinium is the name of the city founded by the Romans in the year 43 AD, a fortified vilage on the north bank of the river Thames, or Tamesis as it was called. It's possible to identify on the plan of the Roman city, the place where today stands Saint Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London. Out of the great walls of the city you can see a place called Barbican, where today stands a large residential and cultural complex. On the second image, an arial picture of the same area, it's impossible not to be amazed by the density and transformation of the city. The contemporary city, massivly built, survived the great fire of 1666 and still keeps something of the original plan.

O lugar é muito usado em filmagens cinematográficas, por seu aspecto "intocado", e é protegido por lei. Detalhe: esse poste ai, de características originais, é na verdade novinho em folha!

This picture was taken on a touristic walk - one of these guided tours, a very good one by the way, around Waterloo Station area, close to the train lines. The place is often used as a film location, because of its "untouched" aspect, and is protected by law. NB: this lamp post, of original characteristic, is in reality brand new!
